Best Colognes to Wear This Winter

Best winter fragrances for men

Winter season always encourages me to wear heavier, longer lasting and more intense colognes. Laud, warm, sweet and more complex fragrances are just much better winter picks for me than light, fresh and fruity scents.

As you switch up your wardrobe in winter and swap summer jacket for heavy winter coat – consider your fragrance choice as it was part of your winter outfit. What you wear has to suit the season.

Some people don’t believe in the idea that different seasons should be associated with different scents but for me it’s just the way it should be. I’m not saying I’m very strict about this statement. Sometimes when it’s freezing cold outside I wear Creed’s Virgin Island Water and pretend I’m on exotic holiday. So don’t pay too much attention what I say here and simply trust your guts because If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun!

But although I love Virgin Island Water, I don’t associate winter with the smell of fresh coconut and lime. In winter I need to feel warm and comfy so for me the general idea of winter-specific fragrances still stands.

As the cooler months approach, any of the warmer, richer smelling scents are appropriate. Some of my favorite winter notes are vanilla, amber, coffee, incense, various spices including cloves, cardamom, nutmeg and ginger. Anything with pine, chocolate, leather, caramel and sandalwood (any wood!) in it also reminds me of the winter months and make me feel warmer. Because winter for me is all about warmth.

So here it is, my ultimate list of 20 fragrances for men that hold up well in cold weather (because 10 would just not be enough to keep you warm during those frosty winter days).
In no particular order:

Rochas Man For Winter

Rochas Man by Rochas

Price – $22.27 for 1.7 oz/50 ml
Fragrance category – Woody Spicy
Winter notes – musk, vanilla, sandal wood, gourmand tone of coffee.
It’s like sweet vanilla ice cream with a shot of the finest espresso. Very “close to the skin” scent with average projection but ladies still really like this one. Sometimes they wear it themselves so keep your bottle safe!

Burberry London for Winter

Burberry London for Men by Burberry

Price – $60.00 for 1.7 oz/50 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Spicy
Winter notes: cinnamon, leather, tobacco leaf
It somehow reminds me of spiced rum or mulled wine. I’m not quite sure what is it exactly but I must say – I really enjoy it. Some people say it’s “Christmas in the bottle”. I’m not going to argue with them. The finest mens Burberry ever created.

Bvlgari Black for Winter

Bvlgari Black by Bvlgari

Price – $27.23 for 1.3 oz/40 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Woody
Winter notes: black tea, vanilla, leather
Another sweet vanilla fragrance but this time with a hint of licorice and burned rubber. If you want to smell like $2000000 Bugatti with luxurious leather interiors and 253 mph on the clock-pick this one. Very suitable for the cold winter too.

Versace Dreamer for Winter

Versace Dreamer by Versace

Price – $25.08 for 3.3 oz/100 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Fougere
Winter notes: juniper, sage, tobacco
Beautiful and powerful tobacco based fragrance, also very underestimated (perhaps because of its low price) but for me that’s a great option for colder weather. Once you get past the bitter tobacco opening, it settles into absolutely wonderful, warming scent.

La Nuit de l`Homme for Winter

La Nuit de l`Homme by Yves Saint Laurent

Price – $54.30 for 1.7 oz/50 ml
Fragrance category – Woody Spicy
Winter notes: cardamom, cedar
Bitter and sharp, this is a perfect choice for those special winter nights when you want to warm up your date and end up somewhere nice and cozy…Classy and elegant, more suitable for a night out than weekdays at work. Warm and inviting and will get you noticed, trust me.

Gucci Envy for Winter

Envy for Men by Gucci

Price – $59.99 for 3.3 oz/100 ml (discontinued so act fast)

Envy could be extremely hard to find without breaking the bank but it is worth it! Strong, spicy, smoky, peppery, incensy, all at the same time. Romantic, masculine, sexy, sensual, distinct, all only when you want it.

Encre Noire for Winter

Encre Noire for Men by Lalique

Price – $30.19 for 1.7 oz/50 ml

It is not for everyone. Woodsy, dark and heavy with this special smoky accent just perfect for cold winter nights. Not recommended for younger men – you need high level of confidence to be able to deal with consequences when it comes to this one.

Givenchy Play Intense for Winter

Givenchy Play Intense for Men by Givenchy

Price – $60.00 for 1.7 oz/50 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Fougere
Winter notes: amyris wood, bergamot, coffee flower
What do you think about Justin Timberlake? My wife thinks he is sweet and sexy, masculine but cheeky, warm and sensual. He is also the face and body of this Givenchy fragrance. Not much coffee in it, it’s more like warm caramel marshmallows for me. Tasty :)

Creed Royal Oud for Winter

Royal Oud by Creed

Price – $205.95 for 2.5 oz/70 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Fougere
Winter notes: cedar, sandalwood
Over $200 for 2.5 oz is a lot of money but for the price you’re getting one of the best Creed’s creations. Inspired by a royal Persian palace, it’s warm and welcoming. If you’re on the budget – don’t buy it blind, sample it first.

212 VIP for Winter

212 VIP Men by Carolina Herrera

Price – $41.81 for 1.7 oz/50 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Woody
Winter notes – vodka, gin, ginger, leather, spices
I would definitely recommend this one for Christmas night out. Perfect choice for a party animal. I prefer this over the original 1 Million, it’s a little bit more sophisticated and it drives women crazy – in a very good way ;)

Dolce and Gabbana The One for Winter

The One for Men by Dolce & Gabbana

Price – $59.00 for 1.7 oz/50 ml

This is one of my old time favorites and great choice for winter days. Very warm and sophisticated. This could be your signature fragrance for those special occasions like formal dinners, office meetings or just to keep yourself warm.

Tobacco Vanille for Winter

Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford

Price – $290.00 for 3.4 oz/100 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Spicy
Winter notes – tobacco leaf, vanilla, cacao
This is an expensive one, Tom Ford’s Private Blend but what a wonderful sweet vanilla with a hint of cinnamon. I wouldn’t wear it in the summer time, I think Ford’s idea was to create perfect winter cologne and that’s exactly what it is. My best blind buy ever!

Pure Malt for Winter

A*Men Pure Malt by Thierry Mugler

Price – $89.00 for 3.4 oz/100 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Woody
Winter notes – malt whisky, peat, caramel
If you like gourmand scents, scotch whisky and great fun – this rosey-cheeked cologne would open your eyes to a completely different fragrance experience. From Mugler’s A*Man family, Pure Malt is a pure pleasure to wear and gives lots of compliments which is really nice :)

New Haarlem for Winter

New Haarlem by Bond No 9

I think gourmand fragrances are just perfect for winter and this is another great exapmle. Imagine caramel pancakes with maple syrup and hot cup of black coffee for breakfast and you will get the picture. This stuff is so tasty ladies would eat you alive! Or just steal your bottle and wear it themselves.

Musc Ravageur for Winter

Musc Ravageur by Frederic Malle

Price – $170 for 1.7 oz/50 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental
Winter notes – lavender, cinnamon, cloves
The founder and creator of niche fragrance house, Frederic “editor of perfumes” Malle wants you to hate or love his Musc Ravageur. Don’t be neutral and make up your mind. Forget about this rubbish cologne or fall in love with a masterpiece.

Spicebomb for Winter

Spicebomb by Viktor&Rolf

Price – $85 for 1.7 oz/50 ml
Fragrance category – Woody Spicy
Winter notes – leather, tobacco, saffron
The male equivalent of the famous Flowerbomb fragrance, Spicebomb is what you want to wear to get noticed. It starts with fresh citrus/bergamot/grapefruit flavors and leads towards this coffee, vanilla, saffron and leather. This is definitely a winter, spicy scent.

Original Santal for Winter

Original Santal by Creed

Price – $159 for 4 oz/120 ml
Fragrance category – Oriental Woody
Winter notes – cinnamon, juniper berry, vanilla
Some people compare Original Santal to JOOP Homme but for me Santal is made of much better ingredients and not synthetic at all, like JOOP. I can smell warm cinnamon here, sweet vanilla, fiery ginger and some juniper berries. Did I mention it’s perfect for winter?

Varvatos Vintage for Winter

Vintage by John Varvatos

Price – $64 for 2.5 oz/70 ml
Fragrance category – Woody Chypre
Winter notes – juniper berries, fir balsam, tobacco, suede
It starts spicy and sweet with strong woody scent, than tobacco and suede notes come up. It’s very mature and masculine so stop being a boy for a moment, find your black trench coat and go hunting…don’t talk to much, Varvatos Vintage speaks for itself.

It’s fresh at the beginning, than spicy and powdery with a lot of various warm tones including amber and vanilla. Not everyone is going to fall in love with Tom Ford Noir immediately, another hate or love moment but it’s definitely worth to try.

Armani Code Casino for Winter

Armani Code Casino Limited Edition by Armani

Price – $79 for 2.5 oz/70 ml

Winter notes: guaiac wood, tonka bean.
Very similar to the original Armani Code so nice and spicy but this limited edition comes with a gift; a luxurious deck of playing cards imprinted with the Giorgio Armani name so now you can practice your poker face at home. This fragrance is a legend!
